FORMATION OF SMOOTH VERTICAL SURFACE ON AN OPTICAL COMPONENT

A method for forming a surface on a component for optical networking is disclosed. The method includes applying an etchant and a first passivant to the component at a ratio that causes formation of a groove in the component. The groove having sides where the surface is to be formed. The method also includes reducing the ratio such that the application of the passivant causes a protective material to be formed on at least the side of the groove where the surface is to be formed.
