Apparatus for generating motive power comprises two relatively movable parts (21, 23) and means for using expansion of a substance in a less mobile state into a more mobile state, such as from liquid to gas or solid to gas, to cause relative movement of said two parts. The relative movement can be linear or rotational depending on the relationship between said two parts.
