A formaldehyde sterilizer comprising, inside a housing (10), a formaldehyde gas generator (36), a humidity controller (32) for controlling the humidity of formaldehyde gas, a temperature controller (34) for controlling temperature, a gas carrier for introducing the formaldehyde gas into a space to be sterilized, an exhaust gas treating unit (46) for treating exhaust gas from the space, and a gas exhausting unit for exhausting the exhaust gas, the sterilizer further having a controller (24) for controlling the formaldehyde gas generator, the humidity controller, the temperature controller, the gas carrier, and the exhaust gas treating unit respectively, and for controlling respectively the concentration, humidity and temperature of the formaldehyde inside the space to be sterilized to at least 160 ppm, 50 to 90 RH%, and 20 to 40 ~C.
