<p>A vehicle has a body structure (10) defining a passenger compartment, forwardly extending near and offside side rails (14,15) and a cross-member (20) connecting the forward ends of the side rails (14,15). The engine (16) is mounted on resilient engine mounts between the side rails (14,15) and behind the cross-member (20) with space (21) between the engine and cross-member for air flow and access to components of the engine. The side rails are arranged to collapse in the event of a frontal impact and to absorb energy from the impact. An airbag (25) positioned between the engine block (16) and the cross-member (20) without interfering with air flow or access is deployed in the event of a frontal impact and is effective to transfer loads from the engine block (16) to the cross-member thereby reducing forward movement of the engine block on its mounts relative to the body structure (10).</p> |
