PURPOSE:To manufacture sheet glass with superior mechanical breaking strength at a low cost by dipping carbon fibers in molten glass, drawing out the fibers provided with oriented planes, and solidifying molten glass stuck to the oriented planes. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fibers 1 are introduced into a vessel 5 filled with molten glass 15 in a melting furnace 20 through rolls 2 for isolating the external atmosphere. A starting material for the molten glass is continuously charged from a hopper 22. The carbon fibers are pulled up through rolls 11, 13. The interval between the carbon fibers forming two layers is determined with an adjuster 31 for controlling thickness, and glass 8 sticks to the insides of the carbon fibers 7, 7 and the front and rear sides. The carbon fibers are further pulled up through rolls 21 for controlling thickness and surface state in a slow cooling section 22. The furnace 20 is filled with an N2 atmosphere by feeding N2 from an inlet 3 and releasing it from an outlet 18. The resulting sheet glass is pulled up through rolls 14, 19 and cut to a prescribed shape with laser beam 17.
