A low-temperature sinterable ceramic composition which can be simultaneously sintered with a low melting point metal, such as silver or copper, has a preferable combination of high strength and superior electrical characteristics. The low-temperature sinterable ceramic composition is formed by mixing a ceramic component comprising an MgO crystal phase and an MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB> crystal phase and a glass component composed of 13 to 50 wt% silicon oxide, 3 to 30 wt% boron oxide, and 40 to 80 wt% alkaline earth oxide. The ceramic composition may also include copper oxide and the glass component may contain alkali metal oxide eg. Li<SB>2</SB> O. The composition is used to form the insulating layer in a multilayer ceramic substrate comprising an insulating layer laminated to a conductive layer. |
