NMR apparatus for conducting experiments on an extremity of a big animal 12 , in particular a horse. The apparatus comprises a magnet assembly 76 for receiving the extremity and a radio frequency (rf) assembly 60 for irradiating rf signals on the extremity and/or for receiving nuclear magnetic resonance signals from the extremity. The apparatus comprises a housing 10 adapted to the shape of the big animal 12. The housing 10 comprises a protrusion 16, 18 for receiving the extremity. The protrusion 16, 18 is adapted to be inserted into the magnet assembly 76. The rf assembly 60 is adapted to be attached to the protrusion 16, 18.
