PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating film forming method capable of stably forming a coating film having a plating like appearance. SOLUTION: In the method for forming the coating film by successively applying two layers of a metallic base coat A formed by blending fine metallic foil having <=0.08μm thickness and 5-40μm average particle diameter and a clear coat B are successively applied on a material to be coated. In the multi- layer coating film forming method, the metallic base coat A is diluted to <=5 wt.% in solid matter at the time of coating and applied on the material to be coated, and the concentration of the non-volatile component of the metallic base coat A after the lapse of one minute is defined as >=80 wt.%.
