PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method of a water turbine driving compressor capable of stably operating the compressor at a desired rotational speed with a rise up early at starting time and the water turbine driving compressor for executing this operating method. SOLUTION: An electric motor 10 is connected to an input side of a compressor main unit 50, also a water turbine 40 is connected through a clutch means 62 of centrifugal clutch, electromagnetic clutch, etc., outputs of the electric motor 10 and the water turbine 40, synthesized, can be input to the compressor main unit 50. A compressor 1 is started by the electric motor 10, also when a rotational speed of the water turbine 40 is increased to a preset rotational speed or more, for instance, like a rated rotational speed or more of the electric motor 10, the water turbine 40 and the compressor main unit 50 are connected by the clutch means 62, and an output of the water turbine 40 is input to the compressor main unit 50.
