PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a massaging apparatus which can detect rotation of a screw shaft and its direction and can accurately judge the position of a massaging unit regardless of movement condition of a hoisting and lowering motor. SOLUTION: In a chair type or a bed type massaging apparatus, a limit detecting instrument 45 for detecting that a massaging unit 20 moves to one of the end parts of a transferring path is provided on the end part along a screw shaft 30 of the massaging unit 20 and two pulse generating means 50 and 51 for detecting rotation of the screw shaft 30 are arranged in the neighborhood of the screw shaft 30 by shifting the phase in the rotational peripheral direction of the screw shaft, and a member 40 to be detected being detectable by the pulse generating means 50 and 51 is arranged on the screw shaft 30 and the limit detecting instrument 45 and the pulse generating means 50 and 51 are electrically connected with a control means 60 and hoisting and lowering position of the massaging unit 20 is detected based on signals from the limit detecting instrument 45 and the pulse generating means 50 and 51.
