PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect misfire and provide a warning. SOLUTION: A misfire rate in every predetermined cumulative engine speed of an internal combustion engine (S4), and a reference misfire rate is set (S8). When the misfire rate found in the step S4 exceeds the reference misfire rate set in the step S8, this misfire detection device determines that abnormality is present in the internal combustion engine. In this device, the reference misfire rate is divided in accordance with a starting condition, for example, a cooling temperature and an intake temperature.
