PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle steering unit which allows the position of a manipulating member to correspond to a steering angle upon a start even after a vehicle is rested for parking in such a condition that leftward or rightward steering is made in a steer-by-wire system. SOLUTION: A motion of a steering actuator 2 controlled in accordance with a degree of manipulation of a rotary manipulating member 1 is transmitted to a wheel 4 so as to change the steering angle in accordance with a motion of the manipulating member 1 without the manipulating member 1 being mechanically coupled to the wheel 4. Upon abnormality of steering control by the steering actuator 2, the manipulating member 1 is mechanically coupled to the wheel 4 so that the steering angle is changed in accordance of a degree of manipulation of the manipulating member 1. A manipulating actuator 19 applies to the manipulating member 1 a torque which balances with a torque based upon a resilient force for returning the manipulating member 1 into a straightforward steering position when a vehicle speed is zero while an engine is operated. The generation of torque of the actuator 19 is released after the manipulating member 1 is mechanically coupled to the wheel 4 if the vehicle speed is zero while an engine stop signal is delivered. |
