PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the deviation of a chuck from its center position and also the smooth operation of a knocking member when a knocking operation is performed in a side knock-type propelling pencil. SOLUTION: A center rail 28 supported by a pillar 30 is formed in a barrel 1. A slant member 27 with a slant face 26 is mounted, in a freely slidable manner, on the center rail 28 and is rotatable to some extent. The front end of the slant member 27 touches the rear end of a chuck fitting element 6 with a chuck 5 fitted. The slant face 22 of a knock button 18 touches the slant face 26 at the rear end of the slant member 27. The slant member 27 moves on the center rail 28 by depressing the knock button 18 and consequently, the chuck fitting element 6 makes headway to feed a lead 8.
