Fumes emitted from a galvanizing kettle (2) are controlled by admitting air to an upper periphery of the kettle (2) so that heat from the kettle (2) warms the air and causes it to convect upwardly in a first inner curtain at least partially surrounding and entraining the fumes from the kettle (2), impelling air from a blower upwardly through slots (20) in plenums (22) at least partly surrounding a base of the first curtain, and directing the air impelled through the slots (20) to converge inwardly towards the first curtain so as to form a second air curtain (18). The second curtain (18) protects the first curtain and guides it upwardly towards a hood (10) supported above the kettle (2) by a distance at least sufficient to permit racks supporting articles to be galvanized to be conveyed over and away from the kettle (2), and to be lowered into and withdrawn from the kettle (2) without obstruction by the hood (10). |
