PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce cerium/aluminum oxide which does not lower an oxygen storage function even when exposed in a high temperature atmosphere for a long time and a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas using the cerium/aluminum oxide. SOLUTION: This cerium/aluminum oxide is produced by dispersingα-alumina into a mixed solution of at least one or more kinds of elements selected from among cerium, rare earth elements other than cerium and zirconium, preparing slurry mixed with the alumina, adding a basic solution to the slurry mixed with the alumina and drying and calcining the resultant precipitate. In this cerium/aluminum oxide, the deterioration of oxygen storage function caused by the generation of a solid solution with the other specified element such asγ-alumina is suppressed.
