PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the number of separated paper sheets per unit time in a sheet separation device having a gap sensor to detect separation of paper sheets through detection of a gap between the paper sheets in the moving direction. SOLUTION: This device comprises a tip position distribution computation part 36 to obtain positions of tips of 2nd- or- after documents 1 upon separation and the distribution thereof from output timmings of an interruption signal as well as a transmission signal showing existence of a gap outputted form a gap sensor 34 and a position of the gap sensor 34, a gap sensor position computation part 37 to compute the position of the gap sensor 34 to make minimum a required value of the gap in the document carrying direction between mutual documents separated based on the distribution of the positions of tips of 2nd- or -after documents upon separation obtained by the tip position distribution computatation part 36, and a display part 38 to display the position of gap sensor 34 computed by a gap sensor position computation part 37. With such a constitution, the mounting position of the gap sensor 34 can be made movable in the document delivering direction.
