PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cause slow operation of a plunger, to suppress the occurrence of chattering of point of contact, to prevent welding of a contact, to improve engaging performance of a pinion cutch, and to improve reliability and durability of a starter, in a starter having a magnetic switch. SOLUTION: Clearance in the radial directions of a plunger 8 and a guide 7 and clearance of a moving shaft 10 and a boss hole part 6a are set to 0.15 mm or less. A gap of 1.8 mm or more is provided at the engaging part 16a of a shift lever 16 to axially drive the pinion clutch 15 of a starter 1 and the hole part of the plunger 8. During suction of the plunger 8, an air flow passage is formed between an internal space 14 formed by a boss 6, the plunger 8, and the guide 7 and the contact chamber 11a of the magnetic switch 2.
