PURPOSE: To correct the middle point of a steering sensor by comparing the actual steering angle of a vehicle measured by use of the steering sensor with an estimated steering angle estimated from the actual yaw rate and vehicle speed of the vehicle, and prohibiting various controls of the vehicle when both the steering angles are not conformed to each other. CONSTITUTION: The positions of the lights of light emitting diodes 111, 112 transmitted by a plurality of slits 121 provided at prescribed intervals along the circumferential direction of a slit board 12 are detected by photocouplers 113, 114, and the steering angle (actual steering angle) of a steering wheel is detected from these positions. Thus, alternately ON/OFF-repeated signals of a prescribed frequency are generated in a steering sensor 11 by the rotation of the steering wheel. The steering angle sensor 11 has one set of photocoupler 113, 114, and when the pulse of one of them or the pulses of the both are stopped in the rotating state of the steering wheel, it can be judged that any abnormality is caused in the steering angle sensor 11.
