PURPOSE: Capacitive monitoring of application of adhesive on a substrate with complex permitivity is provided to improved the reliability and accuracy of measurement. CONSTITUTION: A monitoring device has one or more than one sensor(10) provided with two electrodes(11,12) at a given distance from the surface of the coated substrate, which is supplied with an AC voltage for displacement relative to the electrodes. The signal provided by the electrodes is coupled to an electronic measuring stage(15), providing a characteristic signal for the substrate and the liquid or paste coating medium, using the complex components of the permittivity of the coated substrate between the electrodes.
