A method and apparatus are provided for charging secondary batteries. T he method comprises modifying a DC voltage to form a pulse train, and supplying the modified DC voltage to the secondary cell. Additionally, with one or more parameters, such as frequency, pulse width and amplitude, the pulse train can be selected and optimized, to optimize charging of the battery.
