processing packets of variable length (e. g., Internet Protocol packets) requires that byte and packet limits can be identified reliably. In the prior art, to this and, each packet le preceded by length information with respect to the packet and check information that is formed from the length. At the receiving end, this information is checked bit-by-bit, and synchronism exists if there is agreement. Tn order that no new synchronization has to be undertaken in the event that synchronism is lost, according to the present invention a renewed check is made byte-by-byte so as to be able to return to the synchronous state.
