PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the silver halide emulsion capable of preparing flat silver halide grains extremely small in thickness and high in an aspect ratio and monodispersing the grain size. SOLUTION: The flat silver halide grains comprise flat silver halide grains occupying>=50% of the projection areas of the total silver halide grains and having a thickness of <=0.3μm, and a dispersion medium containing a gelatin substituted by at least one 4-16C aliphatic hydrocarbon or an aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one 4-16C aliphatic hydrocarbon group.
