PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can pick up an image with a simple operation without giving a damage to an original. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an original platen 1 that has an original placing section 3 on which an original 2 is placed and where the original placing section 3 is freely moved between an exposed position at which the original placing section 3 is exposed from a reader body 80 and a contained position at which the original placing section 3 is contained in the reader body, with an original platen drive means 5 that moves the original platen 1 to the exposed position or the contained position depending on operation, and with an image pickup device 8 that picks up an image of the original 2 placed on the original placing section 3 when the original platen 1 is at the housing position.
