PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in noise characteristics and thermal fluctuation resistance. SOLUTION: A first base film 2, a first vertical magnetic film 3, a second base film 4, non-magnetic intermediate film 5, a second vertical magnetic film 6 and a protective film 7 are formed on a substrate 1 in this order and the magnetic anisotropic energy of the first vertical magnetic film 3 is specified to be higher than that of the second vertical magnetic film 6.
