PURPOSE:To execute the change of width for a casting slab without any air gap between short side of a mold and solidified shell and any development of excessive compressive deforming resistance by shifting respectively the upper and lower end parts of the short side for the mold during continuous casting for steel at a shifting velocity by the specific equation. CONSTITUTION:During the continuous casting for the steel, the change of width for the casting slab, which is increased or decreased, is executed by shifting the short side of the mold. At the time of the above width changing, the shifting velocity of the upper and lower end parts Vu, Vl is calculated by the following equations. Equation Vu=(Xu-Xl)Uc/L-T.Uc/L-Vou, Vl=(Xu-Xl)Uc/ L-T.Uc/L-Vol, wherein Vu: shifting velocity at the upper end of short side mm/min, Vl: shifting velocity at the lower end of short side mm/min, Xu: distance between the upper end and center of the mold mm, Xl: distance between the lower end and center of the mold mm, Uc: casting velocity mm/min, L length of short side of the mold mm, T: suitable taper at short side, Vou, Vol: function of the upper and lower end part changed, together with progressive of the width changing.
