PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for a liquid crystal alignment film aligned by light having excellent heat resistance and reliability in which the aligning function can be obtained without rubbing treatment, and to provide a liquid crystal alignment film, liquid crystal holding substrate and liquid crystal holding device by using the aforementioned liquid crystal alignment film aligned by light so as to obtain an image of high quality without after image. SOLUTION: The composition for a liquid crystal alignment film aligned by light contains a polyimide or its precursor having a repeating unit expressed by general formula (I) and having a group expressed by general formula (II) on at least one end of the molecule. In formulae, W is a tetravalent organic group, R is a divalent organic group, and X is an acid anhydride residue having a reactive carbon-carbon unsaturated double bond. The liquid crystal alignment film aligned by light, liquid crystal holding substrate and liquid crystal display device also contain the aforementioned composition.
