PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for producing arbutin useful as an antimicrobial agent, etc., and having antioxidant action, by reacting beta-pentaacetylglucose with hydroquinone using a specific reaction solvent. CONSTITUTION:beta-Pentaacetylglucose is reacted with hydroquinone using mono- and/or polyethylene glycol dialkyl ether, preferably ethylene glycol dibutyl ether, etc., as a reaction solvent to afford the aimed compound. The above- mentioned reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. tin tetrachloride, etc., and normally at 90-120 deg.C under 3-150mmHg reduced pressure for 0.5-10hr. The molar amount of the hydroquinone is preferably 1.2-1.7 times based on the beta-pentaacetylglucose, and the amount of the reaction solvent is preferably 0.5-5 times based on the beta-pentaacetylglucose.
