PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detecting apparatus by which the direction of rotation of an engine can be discriminated surely even when the collapse of a waveform due to a change or the like in a load is generated. SOLUTION: A change-point detection circuit 21 detects the change point of a power-generation output generated by a winding 8, i.e., a point in which the inclination of respective phases is changed from a positive to a negative or from the negative to the positive. A pulse-train formation circuit 22 forms pulse-train signals of two systems which use a phase between change points of adjacent phases as a reference. An AND circuit 23 outputs a signal according to the existence of the overlap of the phases in the pulse-train signals of the two systems. A CPU 24 judges the direction of rotation of an engine on the basis of the output of the AND circuit 23.
