PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder which is duarable and reliable and outputs a code signal. SOLUTION: This encoder is constituted in such a way that it is provided with a wiring board 10 on which a plurality of light receiving and emitting devices 12 are arranged and installed, that it is provided with a code plate 13 in which a reflection part 18 is arranged and installed so as to correspond to a code, and that, when the code plate 13 is by moved facing the wiring board 10 so as to be, a code signal is generated.
