PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration in image quality on the occurrence of an error in the case of image separation, to prevent deterioration in the image quality due to difference in image separation by each scanning of an original corresponding to a progressive version, to reduce a capacity required for a separation result storage memory, to decrease the deterioration in the image quality due to binary switching of the separation result and to enhance the cost performance ratio. SOLUTION: The image processing device 16 that converts received image data r, g, b into output signals K, C, M, Y by using separation means 9/14 that generate a separation signal (dot/chromatic estimate signal) representing a type (dot/chromatic) of an image denoted by received image data r, g, b and using an image tone reproduction characteristic (smoothing/edge emphasis, color subtraction of black level estimate component, binary/gradation image output) corresponding to the separation signal, is provided with a memory 10 that stores the separation signal for a prescribed period and with a means 12 that converts the stored separation signal into dot estimate/ chromatic estimate data H/C denoting a multi-gradation number. Data processing circuits 2-6 include image tone reproduction characteristics 3, 5, 6 that are selected corresponding to the data H/C data adapted to each of the multi-gradation numbers. |
