A container (1) with pivoting lid has an elliptic cross section and flat sides (2). A flashing lamp located at one focus is supplied with a current of controlled form by an electrical source and cable (10,11) and projects light through a transparent sleeve (4) to a medical probe or catheter (5) at the other focus. The light is of short duration but contains 5-20% ultra violet rays able to prevent contamination passing to a patient.
