PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently transmit the image of an original including a double sided original even when a setting state by a user relating to the transmission of a double sided original is more or less improper and to allow the user to clearly recognize it when the setting by the user is in error. SOLUTION: Calling operation is started when a read circuit 14 reads valid image information from at least one backside or more and transmission of a double sided image is made. When the read circuit 14 cannot read valid image information from any backside of originals, the image information on the surface side of the original is transmitted to a receiver through a one-side transmission processing and a warning message denoting it is outputted. The double sided transmission is made by a double-sided consecutive transmission processing where all pages of the image information of the surface sides of the originals are first transmitted and then all pages of the image information of the backsides are transmitted or by a double sided alternate transmission processing where the image information of the surface side and the backside of one page of the original are alternately transmitted in order of pages.
