PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which whether a traffic congestion line becomes longer or shorter with time can be decided accurately. SOLUTION: In a method for discriminating elongation/shortening of traffic congestion lines, the state of a traffic congestion (space parameters such as space occupying ratio and average space speed of vehicles, and congestion level) and the end of the row of jammed vehicles are detected with time by processing the photographed pictures of a road and whether the row of jammed vehicles becomes longer or shorter is discriminated based on the variation of the detected results with time.
