PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader constituted in such a manner that lubrication may be surely effected without the dissipation of oil films in spite of prolonged operating time by forming oil sump parts in leg parts for supporting carriers of the image reader which rubs supporting plate parts of a casing and executes scanning by moving the carriers. SOLUTION: Leg parts 30 mounted at the supporting plate parts 2b of the casing 2 by supporting the carriages 10 and 20 are formed of detaining parts 32 to be detained to mounting holes 15 and 23 formed at the carriages 10 and 20 and the supporting leg parts 32 having contact surface part 32b in contact with the supporting plate parts 2b. The oil sump parts 33 of a suitable depth are formed in the contact surface parts 32b and a lubricant like grease is packed therein. The lubricant is fed between the supporting plate parts 2b and the contact surface parts 32b.
