The semiconductor device detects accesses to overshoot i.e. non-used memory addresses with only a part of the outputs of the pre-decoders being supplied to the overshoot address detection circuit. The device has a memory with X rows or columns, where X lies between 2 to the power N and 2 to the power (N-1). An overshoot address detector detects accesses to addresses which are greater than X using the outputs of a number of predecoders. The number of input signals of the overshoot address detector is less than the number of pre-decoders.
