An integrated circuit having a smaller number of external terminals and capable of switching operation modes at appropriate timing. In response to the end of a print operation using an ink cartridge, a change to low power mode is controlled without affecting the normal operation. In the low power mode, power consumption is decreased by initializing a specified address. In the low power mode, on the other hand, power consumption is further decreased by disabling the operations of a sense amplifier for generating signals to read stored data, an address decoder for specifying addresses, a buffer used for reading data, and an internal circuit such as a latch for holding the read data. To decrease the number of external terminals, a common terminal is used for specifying the functions of chip selection, initialization of a circuit block, and change to standby mode.
