Disc drives, such as optical disc drives with laser-light write-read device, require high-speed write-read capabilities together with write-protect, and write -enable functions, and include a spindle drive-motor control unit for controlling the speed of the spindle motor, and in addition use a detecting device for ascertaining whether the disc is write-protected and a device which responds to the detection device so as to control the spindle-motor control unit such that the disc rotates at a first given speed when the disc is write-protected and at a second given speed, lower that the first given speed, when the disc is not write-protected.
