A driven feed pump coupled to or synchronized with the crankshaft, and especially a feed pump of a common rail fuel injection system, is operated in a first condition at a stroke rate corresponding to the number of cylinders, and in a second condition at a stroke rate corresponding to half the number of cylinders. The feed pump is constructed as a two-plunger pump which to display the first operating condition is operated by two plungers, and to display the second operating condition is operated by one plunger. An Independent claims are included for a system to determine the working state or working rate of a 6 or 12 cylinder internal combustion engine which includes the proposed driven feed pump.
