A novel breech system is applied for for automatically repeating firearms, in the case of which breech system the breech (slide or the like) does not slide to the rear during firing and move the cartridges repeatedly forwards from the magazine, but in the case of which the barrel slides forwards and the cartridges are moved repeatedly to the rear from the magazine. In consequence, longer barrel lengths can be implemented with respect to the weapon length which results in an improvement in the utilization of the gas pressure. The forward sliding of the barrel can be effected by gas pressure or by friction between the barrel and projectile, or by both effects. The barrel can be locked on the one hand via a powerful spring, which also has the object of moving the barrel back again, and on the other hand excessively fast forward sliding can be prevented by a pin which latches into a hole in the barrel. The gas pressure acting on the pin cannot press said pin out of the hole, and in consequence release the barrel, until the projectile has reached this hole. The pin can also be used as a triggering device for a lever mechanism which locks the barrel. In order that the cartridges are gripped as deeply as possible during rapid firing (for example to protect the tips of the projectiles as well), a suitable lever can be fitted under the barrel, which lever folds downwards while the barrel is sliding backwards and thus grips deeply the cartridges which are to be fired in repetition.
