An igniter (10) includes an electrically conductive outer housing (14) including a cylindrical member having an outer wall and an inner wall (56) defining a passage (54) through the outer housing (14), and a plug member (12) releasably coupled within the outer housing (14) and including an axial electrode (18) and an electrically insulating insulator element (16) encircling the axial electrode (18), the axial electrode (18) having a first end (20) for connection to an electrical source and a second end (22) for connection within a flame ignition area, and the insulator element (16) adapted to be positioned within the passage (54) of the outer housing (14) such that a gas-tight seal is formed between the insulator element (16) and the inner wall (56) of the outer housing (14). The igniter (10) further includes a firewall (46), a substantially annularly shaped outer electrode (42), and a multiple-piece axial electrode.
