A method and device for starting an internal combustion engine (1), especially of a vehicle, in which the fuel can be directly injected into the combustion chamber (4) and which is connected to an air accumulator (X), itself connected to a combustion chamber (4) via the inlet and/or exhaust valves (5a, 5b) and in which air can be stored at elevated pressure, wherein the air stored in the air accumulator (X) is fed into the combustion chamber (4) by opening the inlet and/or exhaust valves (5a, 5b) of the cylinder concerned (3) at the same time as fuel is injected and subsequently the fuel is ignited, after the inlet and/or exhaust valves are closed.
