<p>A reflection type liquid crystal projector, reduced in price and weight, for synthesizing R, B and G images displayed on R-, B- and G- LCD's (24, 28, 32) for projection onto a screen via a projection lens (36), the projector comprising a polarization converting element (12) for converting white light output from a light source (10) into an S-polarized light, a color separating element (40) that separates this S-polarized light into R, B and G lights, converts the G light into a P-polarized light, renders vertical the output directions of the R, B and G lights, and makes identical the output directions of the B and G lights, a first PBS (52) that reflects the R light output from the color separating element (40), shines it onto the R-LCD (24), and outputs a reflected light, a second PBS (54) that reflects the B light output from the color separating element (40), shines it onto the B-LCD (28), transmits the G light for emission onto the G-LCD (32), and outputs respective reflected lights, and a dichroic prism (56) for synthesizing the R, B and G lights from the first and second PBS's (52, 54) for outputting onto the projection lens (36).</p> |
