SLOW OPENING GAS VALVE

An improved slow opening gas valve (20) for providing a continuous gradual and smooth opening includes an expansible auxiliary chamber (34) connected to an expansible control chamber (32) by a metering orifice (36). The expansible auxiliary chamber (36) slows expansion of the expansible control chamber (32), thereby slowing the opening of the gas valve and allowing gas to ignite at a lower pressure and with a much less audible sound. The gas valve is provided with a normally closed valve member (30, 60) for controlling the flow of gas through the gas valve and a diaphragm (64) forms a movable wall of the expansible control chamber (32) that is operable upon the expansion of the chamber to move the valve member to an open position.
