A manually actuable release arm (52) of a fifth wheel coupling is engageable with a plate (12) in a first position (shown) wherein the locking member (46 ) is retracted to allow release (or entry) of a king pin (28) and in a second position wherein the member (46) is projected to hold a locking jaw (30) in its king pin locking position. This may be accomplished by respective engagement of detents (60, 62) in the release arm with the edge of an apertu re in the plate flange (14). To assist the release of the king pin (28), a pist on (38) of a fluid actuable piston and cylinder arrangement (38, 39) is connect ed to the release arm (52) and can be operated to move the release arm (52) against the bias of spring (56) to its first (release) position. In this respect, a plunger (70) on the release arm (52) may be used to actuate a switch (78) which operates the piston (38).
