A system (10) and method for shimming a hole (48A) drilled in a bone (14) for the insertion of an orthopedic screw (16). The system includes a sleeve (28) with an elongated body (26) having an external surface (28) and an internal surface (30), a first end (32), a mid portion (34), and a second end (36). The first end of the body (26) includes an opening that can accept a rod (20). The second end (36) of the body (26) is smaller than the first end (32) of the body (26), so that the first end (32) of the sleeve shaped body (26) may be inserted into the hole (48A) with the aid of the rod (20), and so that when the orthopedic screw (16) is inserted into the elongated sleeve the woven fibers of the body (26) will accommodate the orthopedic screw (16) and take up space between the screw (16) and the hole (48A).
