Disclosed are mechanisms for managing a plurality of network elements (122, 120, 612b, 612a, 628a, 630, 612c, 608) through a designated network element (102, 104, 106, 112, 608, 630, 628b). A command is received into the designated network element, and at least a portion of the received command is translated into a translated command for implementation on another network element. The translated command is sent to the other network element for implementation. A data structure (302) is provided within a parent network element configured to represent managed objects of a plurality of children network elements. The parent network element and children network elements are part of a service group and are interconnected. The data structure includes a plurality of managed object representations of each managed object of the children network elements. Each managed object representation includes an attribute set representation of a corresponding attribute set of a selected managed object of the selected child network element.
