Treatment of foul-smelling gases by (a) contacting with scrubbing water containing a catalyst which absorbs the foul-smelling components catalytically and then (b) oxidizing the resulting solution in presence of the catalyst at 0-100 deg C and ambient pressure with an oxidizing agent is such that the catalyst contains (i) an active metal comprising an alkali(ne earth) or transition metal and optionally also (ii) an oxide carrier.
