In a communication network comprising a common signalling channel, two inputs for transmission links to a transit exchange (3) are connected via a data line (12), independent of the user information channels (5a, 5b, 5). A controller controls the common signalling channel (6) by means of a signal so that a link from one input is connected to the first subscriber (7) and from the second input to the second subscriber (8). The terminal signalling of the links to the subscribers is alternately transmitted.
