Method to reduce handovers in mobile radio systems

A method for performing handover of a mobile station (36) from one mobile exchange cell (30) to another mobile exchange cell (32, 34) in a mobile telecommunications system comprising a plurality of mobile exchange cells. The method comprises selecting potential candidate cells (20) to receive the handover, and evaluating the trend of variation of the signal from each of the candidate cells (22). If one or more cells has a positive trend (24), one of said cells with a positive trend is selected (26 or 28). If there are no cells with a positive trend, a cell is selected on the basis of signal quality. Potential cells are selected on the basis of downlink threshold or uplink threshold.
