The machine (1) to set the condition of ballast, in a railway permanent way, has a non-contact sensor (29) in front of the ballast plow (20) in the direction of travel, to determine the actual ballast profile along the rails or the length of the machine. The ballast plow has a position register (25), to determine the relative position changes in relation to the machine frame (3). A control (31) has a memory to store the nominal ballast profile.
